WHAT IS AFTER HOURS SERVICE?
If our office is closed (after regular office hours) and our family practice patient has an urgent concern doctors from our group are on call to provide assistance. This is a part of an agreement with the Ministry of Health to be available to our patients in a comprehensive care system called "FHO" (Family Health Organization). A visit with our after hours usually is quicker and safer than anywhere else, since our FHO doctors share electronic medical records, will know your medical history and can often help by telephone. Patients that register with our practice get a lot of benefits but must sign a document in which they agree to stay within our range of care.
WHY IT MATTERS TO CALL US FOR AFTER HOURS?
The financial model of our practice is FHO, which means that we receive a small monthly "subscription style" fee for each registered patient. This is ensure our patients' primary care needs are met within our clinic (or our FHO group). In return we are responsible for all medical needs of our patients (excluding ER and specialist visits). This is concept is very beneficial for patients since it is in our interest to keep patients healthy and to help comprehensively. But if our patient chooses to go to a walk-in clinic - it looks like we did not our job of being available. We get detailed reports each month to identify patients using walk-in clinics. What happens next is we have to pay the full cost of each walk-in clinic visit. Often we have pay back more than the amount we obtain for this patient care for the whole year.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A PATIENT CANNOT USE AFTER HOURS?
We ask to be mindful of the above, and to contact our clinic after hours service first. With concerning clinic use we typically call or send an email reminder. With repetitive walk-in clinic use despite our reminders we may choose to deroster patients from our practice. For this reason if clinic use or convenience is your priority please register with other doctors who may be financed more flexibly.
